Day-long classroom instruction for first-time beekeepers on
March 3 PLUS hands-on Field Days May 19 & July 21

Enrollment is limited to 24. Course fee includes a one-year membership to The Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild, textbook, and lunch on March 3rd

Saturday, March 3, 2018 Part 1
Six+ hours in the classroom. Learn from a group of experienced urban beekeepers
+ Basic bee biology
+ Considerations about equipment, hive set-up, and location
+ Where to get your first bees & how to install them in the hive
+ “Langstronth hive” management through the seasons
(with a focus on your first 8 weeks)

Saturday, May 19, 2018, Part 2
Three hours in the classroom / three hours hands-on in an apiary
+ “Reading” the frames and making management decisionsthrough the seasons
+ How to recognize common pests & disease
+ Integrated pest management / Natural beekeeping approaches
+ Uses of a nucleus hive and replacing queens

Suit up for a look at what’s going on in the hive. Conduct an inspection with an experienced beekeeper at St. James School’s teaching apiary or another apiary near by. Bring your own veil; bring your own lunch.

Saturday, July 21, 2018, Part 3

Three hours in the classroom / three hours hands-on in an apiary
+ Splitting hives, Combining hives
+ Extracting honey
+ Winterizing your hives
+ Intro to top-bar and Warre hives, alternates to the Langstroth

Suit up for a look at what’s going on in several hives. Conduct an inspection with an experienced beekeeper at St. James School’s teaching apiary or another apiary near by. Bring your own veil; bring your own lunch.

FAQs
Is there a discount rate for seniors and students?
Yes! With valid ID, seniors (60+) and students receive $10 refund at the registration desk, on the first day,

Is there a discount rate for other household member(s)?
Yes! With one paying household member, other household members receive $35 refund each, at the registration desk on the first day. In this option, the household receives one book to share.

What if it’s raining on the field days (hands-on session)?
The indoor classroom portion wil occur on the scheduled date, however the hands-on portion will occur the next day (May 20, Jul 22 respectively) – please save these dates in your calendar in case they are needed.

What’s the refund policy?
Full refund available up to 7 days before first class, then $20 cancellation fee up to the start of first class. No refunds for missing one or more individual class days.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?
You may transfer your ticket for one, two, or all of the classes, as long as you let the course organizer know ahead of time

What if I have special dietary needs?
All attendees will be contacted to determine lunch preferences and dietary needs prior to the course.
