SUMMARY:Mead Making with Dr. Norris Childs - part 1
DESCRIPTION:Mead is honey wine\, made by fermenting honey in water. It’s one of the simplest fermented beverages\, but it offers a wide range of flavors depending on ingredients and process. This four-class series is a hands-on introduction to making mead with Norris Childs. Each session focuses on a different stage of production\, from starting the fermentation through aging and finishing. You’ll work together as a group to make a single batch of mead\, and at the end of the series\, each participant will take home a bottle from that batch. The class will also decide whether to make a traditional mead using only honey\, or to include additional flavorings. The first class meets on Saturday\, April 4\, with sessions every other Saturday through May 16. Reminder emails will be sent before each class. \n\n\n\nAbout Norris\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNorris in his honey house with some of his mead and a lot of different honey. This workshop takes place at Norris’ house so in addition to learning about making Mead you’ll be able to experience one of the most magical honey spots in Philadelphia. \n\n\n\n\n\nA native Philadelphian and GFS graduate\, he spent two years in college before serving 2½ years in the Peace Corps in India\, teaching farmers to grow hybrid corn and sorghum. He went on to medical school\, followed by six years of surgical residency and three years of laboratory research. Returning to Philadelphia in 1980\, he began a surgical practice—and took up beekeeping. In 1989\, he joined the U.S. Navy and was deployed to Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War in 1991. After returning to civilian practice\, he began commuting monthly to California in 2001\, where he also expanded his beekeeping. He retired from the Navy in 2012 and from surgery in 2014. Now retired\, he devotes his time to beekeeping\, grandparenting\, and meadmaking\, which he began in 2016\, producing a variety of traditional\, fruit\, and spiced meads inspired by The Compleat Meadmaker. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Urban Beekeeping - Apiary Session
DESCRIPTION:This is the first apiary session for our 2026 Urban Beekeeping Intro Class \n\n\n\nYou don’t need to bring anything other than sensible shoes and casual dress to the apiary session. We will provide bee suits and expert guidance. \n\n\n\nAs to what’s sensible in shoe-wear\, it’s best to have something with a high top that the bee suit can cover. If you don’t have anything like that wear heavy socks that you can pull over the bee suit. This will protect your ankles. The rest of you including your hands will be covered. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be looking at colonies during the fastest build up period of the year\, on their way to swarming or even post-swarm and we’ll discuss population dynamics\, swarm prevention\, and swarm catching.

The rest of you including your hands will be covered. \n\n\n\n We’ll be looking at colonies during the peak of the nectar flow as they rush to put away as much honey as possible while conditions are best. Swarming is still a possibility so we’ll be keeping an eye out for swarm signs. We will also discuss what to expect in the months to come as nectar dries up and we start to prepare for fall and winter.

SUMMARY:Varroa Mite Management
DESCRIPTION:Varroa management is a year-round effort. This is a three part series of workshops and apiary visits intended to introduce you to testing for Varroa mites and organic treatment strategies. We will also probably encounter and touch on some other hive pests and diseases. \n\n\n\nThe class will start in May. We’ll learn to test for mites discuss treatment strategies\, and apply treatments if needed. Subsequent classes will be in July and September with brief apiary sessions in June\, August\, and October to measure the effectiveness of our treatments. (June TBD\, July 18\, August TBD\, September 26\, Others TBD) \n\n\n\nWe will cover – \n\n\n\n\nTesting\n\nSugar roll\n\n\n\nAlcohol wash\n\n\n\nVisual examination of bees and brood\n\n\n\n\n\nTreatments\n\nFormic Acid – FormicPro\n\n\n\nExtended Release Oxalic – Varroxsan\n\n\n\nBrood breaks\n\n\n\nOxalic dribble\n\n\n\nOxalic vapor\n\n\n\nThymol\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a three part class. You only need to buy one ticket for all three sessions and for the optional follow up apiary sessions. Minimum enrollment for running the class is 5. The class will be held at the Awbury Arboretum teaching apiary.

This is the second of a three part series of workshops and apiary visits intended to introduce you to testing for Varroa mites and organic treatment strategies. We will also probably encounter and touch on some other hive pests and diseases. \n\n\n\nJuly is when varroa really starts to make itself known. We’ll see how well our early testing and treatment strategies held up and look at untreated hives to see if there are any difference. We may be able to discover hives that are more or less mite tolerant. We will continue to test and probably treat. \n\n\n\nThe last class session will be in September with brief apiary sessions in October to measure the effectiveness of our treatments and discuss final treatments and winter prep. SUMMARY:Introduction to Honey Bee Microscopy
DESCRIPTION:Whole bees\, varroa\, small hive beetle vs wax moth larvae\, and other things under a dissecting scope. \n\n\n\n\nJoin Robyn Underwood for a hands-on exploration of bees and their pests. Get up close and personal with pinned worker bees\, varroa mites\, small hive beetle and wax moth larvae\, and more. Use a dissecting microscope to understand why swiffer pads catch shb adults\, how to look for tracheal mites\, what is contained in bottom board debris\, etc. No previous experience required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Varroa Mite Management
DESCRIPTION:Varroa management is a year-round effort. This is the third of a three part series of workshops and apiary visits intended to introduce you to testing for Varroa mites and organic treatment strategies. We will also probably encounter and touch on some other hive pests and diseases. \n\n\n\nSeptember is pretty much the limit for saving your bees from varroa. If you haven’t been successful so far your bees will be dead now or soon. If you have been successful now is the time to make sure that you set them up for success next year. We’ll see how well our earlier testing and treatment strategies held up and discuss what happens to hives that have not been cared for. We may be able to discover hives that are more or less mite tolerant. We will test and possibly treat but our main focus will be winter prep. \n\n\n\nThis is the last class session in the series with a final follow up in October and possibly November that we will schedule during class. \n\n\n\n(September 26\, Others TBD) \n\n\n\nWe will cover – \n\n\n\n\nTesting\n\nSugar roll\n\n\n\nAlcohol wash\n\n\n\nVisual examination of bees and brood\n\n\n\n\n\nTreatments\n\nFormic Acid – FormicPro\n\n\n\nExtended Release Oxalic – Varroxsan\n\n\n\nBrood breaks\n\n\n\nOxalic dribble\n\n\n\nOxalic vapor\n\n\n\nThymol\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a three part class.
