SUMMARY:Urban Beekeeping - Apiary Session
DESCRIPTION:This is now the first apiary session for our 2026 Urban Beekeeping Intro Class since the other first session in April was canceled. \n\n\n\nPlease review and sign the Guild Apiary Liability Waiver. Before you come. You can complete the form online below the PDF. \n\n\n\nYou don’t need to bring anything other than sensible shoes and casual dress to the apiary session. We will provide bee suits and expert guidance. \n\n\n\nAs to what’s sensible in shoe-wear\, it’s best to have something with a high top that the bee suit can cover. If you don’t have anything like that wear heavy socks that you can pull over the bee suit. This will protect your ankles. The rest of you including your hands will be covered. \n\n\n\n We’ll be looking at colonies during the peak of the nectar flow as they rush to put away as much honey as possible while conditions are best. Swarming is still a possibility so we’ll be keeping an eye out for swarm signs. We will also discuss what to expect in the months to come as nectar dries up and we start to prepare for fall and winter.

SUMMARY:Mead Making with Dr. Norris Childs - part 4
DESCRIPTION:Mead is honey wine\, made by fermenting honey in water. It’s one of the simplest fermented beverages\, but it offers a wide range of flavors depending on ingredients and process. This four-class series is a hands-on introduction to making mead with Norris Childs. Each session focuses on a different stage of production\, from starting the fermentation through aging and finishing. You’ll work together as a group to make a single batch of mead\, and at the end of the series\, each participant will take home a bottle from that batch. The class will also decide whether to make a traditional mead using only honey\, or to include additional flavorings. The first class meets on Saturday\, April 4\, with sessions every other Saturday through May 16. Reminder emails will be sent before each class. \n\n\n\nAbout Norris\n\n\n\n\nNorris in his honey house with some of his mead and a lot of different honey. This workshop takes place at Norris’ house so in addition to learning about making Mead you’ll be able to experience one of the most magical honey spots in Philadelphia. \n\n\n\n\nA native Philadelphian and GFS graduate\, he spent two years in college before serving 2½ years in the Peace Corps in India\, teaching farmers to grow hybrid corn and sorghum. He went on to medical school\, followed by six years of surgical residency and three years of laboratory research. Returning to Philadelphia in 1980\, he began a surgical practice—and took up beekeeping. In 1989\, he joined the U.S. Navy and was deployed to Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War in 1991. After returning to civilian practice\, he began commuting monthly to California in 2001\, where he also expanded his beekeeping. He retired from the Navy in 2012 and from surgery in 2014. Now retired\, he devotes his time to beekeeping\, grandparenting\, and meadmaking\, which he began in 2016\, producing a variety of traditional\, fruit\, and spiced meads inspired by The Compleat Meadmaker. \n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here

The first class of the spring session is on Sunday\, March 29 from 10 am – 3 pm will be in a classroom where you will learn: \n\n\n\n\nBasic bee biology\,\n\n\n\nConsiderations about equipment\,\n\n\n\nHive set-up\, and location\,\n\n\n\nWhere to get your first bees & how to put them in the hive\,\n\n\n\nHive management through the seasons (focus on Spring)\,\n\n\n\nNatural beekeeping approaches & strategies\,\n\n\n\nWhat is going on in a live hive\,\n\n\n\nHow to recognize common pests & diseases.\n\n\n\n\nLunch will be provided. \n\n\n\nApiary Sessions:\n\n\n\n\nCancelled Session April 26\n\n\n\nFirst apiary session – May 30\, 2026. 9am – 12pm\n\n\n\nSecond apiary session – June 20\, 2026. 9am – 12pm\n\n\n\n\nThe next two classes in the spring session – April 25 and May 30\, from 9 am – 12 pm\, and June 20\, from 9 am – 12 pm – will be hands-on in-person at the apiary where you’ll suit up for a look at what’s going on in the hive.  You will conduct an inspection with an experienced beekeeper and focus on spring management techniques.  \n\n\n\nThe apiary classes are held simultaneously at two locations – you can choose which location to attend (but we may have to assign people to keep class sizes balanced) – either Awbury Arboretum (in Germantown at 1 Awbury Rd\, 19138) or Anna Bee’s Honey (in South Philly at 2500 Dickinson Street\, 19147). Both classes will be on a Saturday from 9AM – 12PM. \n\n\n\nEach three class session is $200 per person and we can advise on purchasing equipment to get you started once you’ve completed the course. Paying class participants also become Guild members at the “Bee Lover ” level. This will keep you informed of other apiary and volunteer opportunities and give you a discount if you decide to upgrade to Hobbyist or Beekeeper levels. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll Classes

SUMMARY:Wax Dipping your Equipment
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at BeeWorks are running a wax dipping event for us on March 22. Wax dipping replaces most of the water in your wooden boxes with wax\, sealing it against the elements and creating a durable finish that preserves the natural look of the wood. It’s probably the best way to preserve your equipment and lasts longer than paint. \n\n\n\nAll Guild members are welcome to drive their NEW equipment up to BeeWorks and deal directly with Mike and Sarah. It’s about an hour and 45 minutes from Mt. Airy\, maybe a little nearer or further from you. Please call them at the number on the flyer with any questions. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like us to drive up there for you you can bring your equipment to the Equipment Workshop on March 15th. We’ll take it up\, get it dipped and bring it back. We will bring the dipped equipment to the Intro Class on March 29th and distribute it at around 3pm when the classroom session is over. If you can’t make it to that we’ll store your equipment at Awbury until you can pick it up. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the address of BeeWorks if you want to go up there yourself.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the address of Awbury if you want to drop off your equipment on 3/15.

SUMMARY:Equipment Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us two weeks before packages start arriving to learn how to assemble your wooden langstroth hive and get things ready for your bees. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be led by Eric Schoefer who also leads the Apiary Committee. Eric has been beekeeping for 15 years and a carpenter for more.  He makes most of his own beekeeping equipment from scratch\, including many different styles of hives (Langstroth\, AZ\, Top Bar\, Lazutin/Layens and other horizontal configurations). \n\n\n\nWe’ll be showing you the right way to assemble your boxes\, frames\, and whatever else you need help with. The class will focus on wooden Langstroth equipment but Eric will be glad to work with you on other types and configurations if you bring them with you. \n\n\n\nOur friends at BeeWorks LLC can supply you with high quality Amish made woodenware at fair prices. Supplies ordered for this event will be delivered and distributed at the event. You can also buy package bees or Nucs from BeeWorks with packages being available starting on March 27th or 28th. If you sign up we’ll send you what we suggest you purchase and how to do it (they don’t have full online ordering yet). Ordering from BeeWorks LLC is optional though. We’ll show you how to assemble whatever you decide to buy. \n\n\n\nWhile there are many choices of materials for bee hives\, this class will focus on traditional wooden equipment. We’ll show you how to properly glue and nail all your equipment for maximum durability and give everything a protective coat of paint. We will have paint on hand that you can take home with you. \n\n\n\nIf you order your equipment from BeeWorks LLC or bring stuff that you’ve bought elsewhere you can expect to go home with your boxes and some frames assembled and a lesson on how to paint and finish your hives. With a little homework you should have everything you need to install a package or a nuc when they’re available in a few weeks. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also demonstrate how to light and operate a smoker\, your options for protective clothing\, and some other nitty gritty. \n\n\n\nThe Class will take place at Dave’s secret apiary instead of Awbury. We’ll send you the address if you’re signed up for the class.
