SUMMARY:Maker Faire Philadelphia
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer for Maker Faire Philadelphia! We need drivers and attendees to sell honey and talk to folks about bees. This is a really fun early season event at Cherry Street Pier. To volunteer RSVP below. Folks that are eligible to sell honey will see a free ticket if you’re logged in. The event is from 10am to 4pm but we’ll need drivers to show up at Awbury early or the day before to get our stuff down to Cherry St. and set up\, and to help tear down and get the stuff back to Awbury afterwards. Each shift earns a Guild credit that you can use to get Guild apparel or pay for classes. \n\n\n\nMaker Faire is a gathering of fascinating\, curious people who enjoy learning and who love sharing what they can do. From engineers to artists to scientists to crafters\, Maker Faire is a venue for these “makers” to show hobbies\, experiments\, projects. \n\n\n\nWe call it the Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth – a family-friendly showcase of invention\, creativity\, and resourcefulness. \n\n\n\nGlimpse the future and get inspired!

SUMMARY:Mead Making with Dr. Norris Childs - part 2
DESCRIPTION:Mead is honey wine\, made by fermenting honey in water. It’s one of the simplest fermented beverages\, but it offers a wide range of flavors depending on ingredients and process. This four-class series is a hands-on introduction to making mead with Norris Childs. Each session focuses on a different stage of production\, from starting the fermentation through aging and finishing. You’ll work together as a group to make a single batch of mead\, and at the end of the series\, each participant will take home a bottle from that batch. The class will also decide whether to make a traditional mead using only honey\, or to include additional flavorings. The first class meets on Saturday\, April 4\, with sessions every other Saturday through May 16. Reminder emails will be sent before each class. \n\n\n\nAbout Norris\n\n\n\n\nNorris in his honey house with some of his mead and a lot of different honey. This workshop takes place at Norris’ house so in addition to learning about making Mead you’ll be able to experience one of the most magical honey spots in Philadelphia. \n\n\n\n\nA native Philadelphian and GFS graduate\, he spent two years in college before serving 2½ years in the Peace Corps in India\, teaching farmers to grow hybrid corn and sorghum. He went on to medical school\, followed by six years of surgical residency and three years of laboratory research. Returning to Philadelphia in 1980\, he began a surgical practice—and took up beekeeping. In 1989\, he joined the U.S. Navy and was deployed to Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War in 1991. After returning to civilian practice\, he began commuting monthly to California in 2001\, where he also expanded his beekeeping. He retired from the Navy in 2012 and from surgery in 2014. Now retired\, he devotes his time to beekeeping\, grandparenting\, and meadmaking\, which he began in 2016\, producing a variety of traditional\, fruit\, and spiced meads inspired by The Compleat Meadmaker. \n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Eve Bratman - Guild Monthly Meeting - Third Thursday
DESCRIPTION:Pennsylvania beekeepers have long been on the front lines of confronting the spotted lanternfly outbreak. But are spotted lanternflies as disgusting\, nasty\, and pestilent as they were first made out to be?   In this talk\, Dr. Bratman will present her forthcoming publication (accepted to Gastronomica) with her co-author\, Anna Purchase (F&M class of ’26)\, on better understanding spotted lanternfly honey\, inter-species relationality\, and the changing attitudes and aesthetics surrounding learning to live with pests. They find present evidence of changing relations between beekeepers and lanternflies\, and interrogate the discrete and unexpected ways in which lanternfly management and the insect itself are entangled in beekeepers’ lives. \n\n\n\n\nBio:Eve Bratman is a political ecologist and Associate Professor of Environmental Studies in the Department of Earth & Environment at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster\, PA\, USA.  She is author of an award-winning book\, Governing the Rainforest: Sustainable Development in the Brazilian Amazon (Oxford University Press\, 2019)\, and has published over twenty peer-reviewed articles about the politics of pollinator protection\, energy infrastructures\, environmental education\, and urban sustainability in venues including People and Nature\, Earth Stewardship\, Development and Change\, Antipode\, Journal of Environmental Studies and Sciences\, and Orion Magazine. Her next book-in-progress is tentatively called Bee Politics: Ending the War on Nature while Fighting to Save the Bees. \n\n\n\nWe meet at 7pm at St. James School. 🐝

SUMMARY:Apian - Guild Monthly Meeting - Third Thursday
DESCRIPTION:We have another bee package to give away this month! \n\n\n\nOur speaker this month is Aladin Boroli who will be presenting on the Apian project. Aladin is in Germany\, where it’s a lot later than Philadelphia so we will start with his presentation this month and follow with the beek panel. \n\n\n\nApian\n\n\n\nThe Ministry of Bees is responsible for the relationship between humans and all bee species. It is tasked by bees to safeguard the history of this age-old relationship\, and does so by producing polymorphous ethnographies. These ethnographies combine various media\, including video\, sound\, photography\, and writing in order to represent the world of bees to humans and promote Socialist Beekeeping practices. The Ministry aims to establish a framework for the future of this relationship in the context of climate breakdown – a future free from extractive practices and grounded in ancestral knowledge. You can visit the Apian Website here: www.apian.ch. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBee Panel\n\n\n\nOur beekeeping topic this month will be spring feeding. We’ll again have a panel of local beekeepers to discuss why you might want to feed in the early spring\, how to do it\, and what to expect. \n\n\n\nDoor Prize\n\n\n\nOur door prize this month is from BeesNTrees who have donated a package of bees. We handed out order forms for them last month and you can download you very own version here. \n\n\n\nBeesNTrees is in Hershey\, but if Bill gets enough orders he will bring the packages to us when they arrive. Please give your order forms and payment to Eric Schoefer or send them to us at info@phillybeekeepers.org \n\n\n\nWe meet at 7pm at St. James School. 🐝 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeeting passcode is ‘guildmeet’

SUMMARY:Wax Dipping your Equipment
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at BeeWorks are running a wax dipping event for us on March 22. Wax dipping replaces most of the water in your wooden boxes with wax\, sealing it against the elements and creating a durable finish that preserves the natural look of the wood. It’s probably the best way to preserve your equipment and lasts longer than paint. \n\n\n\nAll Guild members are welcome to drive their NEW equipment up to BeeWorks and deal directly with Mike and Sarah. It’s about an hour and 45 minutes from Mt. Airy\, maybe a little nearer or further from you. Please call them at the number on the flyer with any questions. \n\n\n\nIf you’d like us to drive up there for you you can bring your equipment to the Equipment Workshop on March 15th. We’ll take it up\, get it dipped and bring it back. We will bring the dipped equipment to the Intro Class on March 29th and distribute it at around 3pm when the classroom session is over. If you can’t make it to that we’ll store your equipment at Awbury until you can pick it up. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the address of BeeWorks if you want to go up there yourself.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is the address of Awbury if you want to drop off your equipment on 3/15.

SUMMARY:Equipment Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us two weeks before packages start arriving to learn how to assemble your wooden langstroth hive and get things ready for your bees. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be led by Eric Schoefer who also leads the Apiary Committee. Eric has been beekeeping for 15 years and a carpenter for more.  He makes most of his own beekeeping equipment from scratch\, including many different styles of hives (Langstroth\, AZ\, Top Bar\, Lazutin/Layens and other horizontal configurations). \n\n\n\nWe’ll be showing you the right way to assemble your boxes\, frames\, and whatever else you need help with. The class will focus on wooden Langstroth equipment but Eric will be glad to work with you on other types and configurations if you bring them with you. \n\n\n\nOur friends at BeeWorks LLC can supply you with high quality Amish made woodenware at fair prices. Supplies ordered for this event will be delivered and distributed at the event. You can also buy package bees or Nucs from BeeWorks with packages being available starting on March 27th or 28th. If you sign up we’ll send you what we suggest you purchase and how to do it (they don’t have full online ordering yet). Ordering from BeeWorks LLC is optional though. We’ll show you how to assemble whatever you decide to buy. \n\n\n\nWhile there are many choices of materials for bee hives\, this class will focus on traditional wooden equipment. We’ll show you how to properly glue and nail all your equipment for maximum durability and give everything a protective coat of paint. We will have paint on hand that you can take home with you. \n\n\n\nIf you order your equipment from BeeWorks LLC or bring stuff that you’ve bought elsewhere you can expect to go home with your boxes and some frames assembled and a lesson on how to paint and finish your hives. With a little homework you should have everything you need to install a package or a nuc when they’re available in a few weeks. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also demonstrate how to light and operate a smoker\, your options for protective clothing\, and some other nitty gritty. \n\n\n\nThe Class will take place at Dave’s secret apiary instead of Awbury. We’ll send you the address if you’re signed up for the class.

SUMMARY:Mirza Tihic - Guild Monthly Meeting - Third Thursday
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Door Prize for in person attendees will be a 3 lb package from Mark Antunes of Honey Hill Farm!!!! \n\n\n\n\nMirza Tihic is a beekeeper and faculty member at Syracuse University in the College of Professional Studies and adjunct professor of entrepreneurship with the Department of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises (EEE) at the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. \n\n\n\nHis research focuses on the intersection of entrepreneurship and disability. His research aims to expand the traditional barriers related to small business services and include the complete entrepreneurial ecosystem of people with disabilities and veterans. An interest of Tihic is understanding the broader social network and its role in influencing entrepreneurial decisions given the disability-related challenges they face. \n\n\n\n\nHe has recently initiated a project studying what actually drives us as beekeepers\, and how we think about success beyond just honey yields. Please take the survey! \n\n\n\nHis survey below asks questions other research has never bothered with—like how our connection to nature and the bees themselves shape what we do\, and what thriving really means in this work. \n\n\n\nIt would be very helpful if you were to take the survey either before or after the meeting (you can always stop and continue the survey anytime): https://syracuseuniversity.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0CKrvvt9Cf5gTQO \n\n\n\nThe survey covers beekeepers from backyard hobbyists to commercial operations\, across multiple states and countries. I’m hoping to publish findings that actually reflect our reality\, not just what academics think matters. \n\n\n\nPlease come with your questions and thoughts on this fascinating but little explored topic. \n\n\n\nBeekeeping Focus\n\n\n\nThis month we’re going to be talking about boxes. One of the decisions you need to make when you start beekeeping is what kind of boxes you want to use. Your equipment will be a big investment and there are a lot of choices\, not all of them obvious. \n\n\n\nWe will have a panel of experienced beekeepers who will talk about the pros and cons of various types of equipment with a focus on the humble bee box. \n\n\n\nWe meet at 7pm at St. James School. 🐝

SUMMARY:Solstice Pot Luck
DESCRIPTION:Every year the beekeepers of Philadelphia come together to celebrate the Winter Solstice also known as the shortest day and the start of winter. It’s a dire passage from darkness to gradual lightening which we celebrate. We don’t go too far with these celebrations. This is a family friendly event. We may have a bonfire. We will have food. \n\n\n\nWe will do the traditional ceremony that ensures the effectiveness of our mite controls and the adequacy of our winter stores. These are important concerns and should not be left to chance. A little ritual is always a good idea. \n\n\n\nSo Join Us! – whether you’re a new or long term guild member or a current or future volunteer or want to learn more about the beekeepers guild and meet our friendly welcoming community\, please join us at our potluck winter solstice. Bring a dish to share or come as you are. Future volunteers – no need to bring food unless you want to – you’re welcome and we’d love to meet you! \n\n\n\nYou can RSVP at the link below!
