SUMMARY:Mead Making with Dr. Norris Childs - part 4
DESCRIPTION:Mead is honey wine\, made by fermenting honey in water. It’s one of the simplest fermented beverages\, but it offers a wide range of flavors depending on ingredients and process. This four-class series is a hands-on introduction to making mead with Norris Childs. Each session focuses on a different stage of production\, from starting the fermentation through aging and finishing. You’ll work together as a group to make a single batch of mead\, and at the end of the series\, each participant will take home a bottle from that batch. The class will also decide whether to make a traditional mead using only honey\, or to include additional flavorings. The first class meets on Saturday\, April 4\, with sessions every other Saturday through May 16. Reminder emails will be sent before each class. \n\n\n\nAbout Norris\n\n\n\n\nNorris in his honey house with some of his mead and a lot of different honey. This workshop takes place at Norris’ house so in addition to learning about making Mead you’ll be able to experience one of the most magical honey spots in Philadelphia. \n\n\n\n\nA native Philadelphian and GFS graduate\, he spent two years in college before serving 2½ years in the Peace Corps in India\, teaching farmers to grow hybrid corn and sorghum. He went on to medical school\, followed by six years of surgical residency and three years of laboratory research. Returning to Philadelphia in 1980\, he began a surgical practice—and took up beekeeping. In 1989\, he joined the U.S. Navy and was deployed to Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War in 1991. After returning to civilian practice\, he began commuting monthly to California in 2001\, where he also expanded his beekeeping. He retired from the Navy in 2012 and from surgery in 2014. Now retired\, he devotes his time to beekeeping\, grandparenting\, and meadmaking\, which he began in 2016\, producing a variety of traditional\, fruit\, and spiced meads inspired by The Compleat Meadmaker. \n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Guild Monthly Meeting - Mark and Milan
DESCRIPTION:This month we have three speakers you won’t find anywhere else! \n\n\n\nMilan Williams and Tifanny Turrentine PHD from Lankenau High School will present Milan’s research on the antimicrobial properties of Philadelphia Honey. Under Tifanny’s supervision Milan tested local honeys for their ability to kill bacteria following a protocol developed by Ferat Ozturk from UTexas. She compared our local honeys including Spotted Lanternfly Honeydew to Manuka and other well known anti-microbial honey. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMark will be presenting on how honeybees communicate using sound and vibration. This presentation explores the hidden language of honeybees – how they use sound and vibration to communicate within the hive. Blending core honeybee biology with behavioral insights\, it explains how bees perceive their world not just through sight and scent\, but through finely tuned sensitivity to vibration. The talk breaks down key communication methods\, including the famous waggle dance\, showing how bees transmit information about food sources through movement\, timing\, and subtle acoustic cues. It also introduces what sound actually is – vibrational energy moving through a medium – and how bees interpret these signals through their bodies and specialized sensory organs. Together\, these elements reveal a sophisticated\, largely invisible communication system that keeps the colony functioning as a unified whole. \n\n\n\nMark is a Philadelphia-based beekeeper in his 11th year of practice and the founder of Anna Bee’s Honey\, an urban apiary located in a four-acre community garden in South Philadelphia. Through hands-on education and immersive experiences\, Anna Bee’s Honey raises awareness about the importance of bees while helping people build a deeper connection to nature in the city. The apiary produces 100% pure raw honey and a range of hive products\, including candles\, lip balm\, raw pollen\, and beeswax luminaries\, and offers workshops\, presentations\, and a “Be a Beekeeper for a Day” experience. Mark serves on the board of the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild\, helps teach the Guild’s introductory beekeeping class\, and supports events.  \n\n\n\nWe meet at 7pm at St. James School. 🐝

SUMMARY:Urban Beekeeping - Apiary Session
DESCRIPTION:This is now the first apiary session for our 2026 Urban Beekeeping Intro Class since the other first session in April was canceled. \n\n\n\nPlease review and sign the Guild Apiary Liability Waiver. Before you come. You can complete the form online below the PDF. \n\n\n\nYou don’t need to bring anything other than sensible shoes and casual dress to the apiary session. We will provide bee suits and expert guidance. \n\n\n\nAs to what’s sensible in shoe-wear\, it’s best to have something with a high top that the bee suit can cover. If you don’t have anything like that wear heavy socks that you can pull over the bee suit. This will protect your ankles. The rest of you including your hands will be covered. \n\n\n\n We’ll be looking at colonies during the peak of the nectar flow as they rush to put away as much honey as possible while conditions are best. Swarming is still a possibility so we’ll be keeping an eye out for swarm signs. We will also discuss what to expect in the months to come as nectar dries up and we start to prepare for fall and winter.

SUMMARY:Made in Philadelphia Fall Market
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer for The Made In Philadelphia Summer Market! We need volunteers to help out and lots of beekeepers to sell their honey. The Made in Philadelphia Market series is one of the premier open air markets in the city. The market is in Dilworth Park the second weekend in October and it promises to be a lot of fun and a huge opportunity for everyone who participates. \n\n\n\nTo volunteer RSVP below. If you’re a Guild member you’ll receive Guild credit for showing up which you can use for Guild apparel or classes. \n\n\n\nBeekeeper and Hobbyist members will see a free ticket if you’re logged in. We need a lot of folks for this event. The Market runs for 3 days. Sign up will close one week prior to the market so we can schedule everyone who signs up. \n\n\n\nThe event is from Noon to 8pm on Friday and Saturday and Noon to 6pm on Sunday. We’ll need a driver on Friday to show up at Awbury early and help us get our stuff down there and one on Sunday to help bring the stuff home. The Market provides a tent so the amount of equipment we will have to bring should be minimal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Fall Market\n\n\n\nJoin us as we mark the 11th anniversary of the Made in Philadelphia Fall Market: so many incredible years of showcasing the region’s finest makers\, artists\, and culinary creators. \n\n\n\nFrom October 9–11\, 2026\, Dilworth Park transforms into a vibrant open-air marketplace in Center City. Celebrate the season at one of the best fall markets in Philadelphia\, featuring talented vendors from across the tri-state area. \n\n\n\nStroll through rows of handcrafted treasures and discover unique finds in art\, photography\, jewelry\, accessories\, skincare\, glassware\, wood crafts\, and more. This fall market in Philadelphia is filled with delicious bites and gourmet treats – perfect for you and even your furry friends. \n\n\n\nFrom beloved Farmers Market favorites to exciting seasonal newcomers\, there is something special waiting at every booth. This free fall market at Dilworth Park in Center City Philadelphia is a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy local shopping and seasonal charm. \n\n\n\nAdmission is FREE\, so bring your friends\, bring your family\, and help us celebrate ten years of supporting local creativity at the Made in Philadelphia Fall Market!
