Update from Project Apis m.

We’ve gotten a note from Tessa Dingman at Project Apis m. about a webinar on what they’ve found out so far about the big bee die off this spring.

From all reports it’s much bigger than the 40% annual losses that seem to be reported every year. Those reports also usually say that commercial beekeepers have the lowest losses, presumably because they actively manage their bees.

One always suspects that the 40% loss level might over-represent inexperienced beekeepers. Certainly most experienced beekeepers I know have lower losses than that. The USDA ELAP program supports beekeepers who lose more than 22% of their colonies in a year, which is what they consider baseline.

We should find out from this webinar how big the losses are and hopefully some strong clues about the causes.

The Webinar is Friday Feb. 28 at noon (EST)
